Player Talent Scout: Thiago Almada

The Superliga Argentina finished in dramatic style the weekend before last as Carlos Tevez’s late goal saw Boca Juniors pip their great rivals River Plate to the title on the final day.

Tevez is coming to the end of a fantastic career, but there is another player from his neighbourhood who has been making headlines this season. Thiago Almada of Vélez Sarsfield was also born in the tough barrio of Fuerte Apache and all the signs point to him following Tevez’s path to the biggest European clubs.

Almada has been used all across the attack for Velez this season, as well as in a deeper central midfield role. He is known for the verticality of his play, always looking to dribble and combine with his teammates.

Almada was mostly used a substitute by Velez in the early part of the season, but he became a regular starter for the run-in as Velez finished 3rd in the table, their best league season since 2013.

Only 171cm tall, Almada has earned comparisons to Tevez and Sergio Aguero, using his low centre of gravity turn sharply and leave defenders in his wake.

Manchester City are the team who have been most strongly linked with Almada so he could follow in the path of both Tevez and Aguero in wearing the sky blue shirt of City and the famous Albiceleste jersey of Argentina.
